MUCUS IN EYES

Have you ever woken up in the morning and noticed that your eyes are sticky and feel like there's something in them? This sensation is often caused by an excess of mucus in the eyes, a common and usually harmless condition. While it might be an uncomfortable experience, understanding the role of mucus in our eyes can help us appreciate the intricate workings of our visual system.

Mucus is a natural substance produced by various glands in the body, including those found in the eyes. In the context of the eyes, conjunctival mucus, produced by the conjunctival glands, plays a crucial role in maintaining ocular health. It acts as a protective barrier, lubricating the surface of the eye and helping to keep it moist. This is particularly important as the eye's surface is constantly exposed to the external environment, which can be dry and abrasive.

When there is an overproduction of mucus in the eyes, it can lead to a condition known as conjunctival hyper secretion. This can result in a sticky, stringy discharge that may cause irritation, redness, and a feeling of grittiness in the eyes. Such symptoms can be more pronounced in the morning, as the body's natural mucus production tends to increase during sleep.
